Outreach Program

We offer presentations on the history and science of submarines at schools or other educational groups on Oahu and the Neighbor Islands. There is no charge for this service, and weekday scheduling is flexible.  Homeschooling and scouting groups are welcome to participate in this program, as well.

  • Objective: To familiarize 4th or 5th grade students with the history and functioning of U.S. submarines
  • Formal Lesson Plan designed to fit into science and history studies
  • Hands-on, interactive demonstration of a diving and surfacing model submarine
  • Graphic and textual information, including photographs and posters
  • Educational handouts for each student

Submarine Rescues

A critical task performed by the US submarine force during World War II, was the rescuing of downed pilots and air crews; They were so efficient at it, that they rescued 520 US airmen from the Pacific Ocean waters. One of those rescued, went on to become President of the United States.

Rescueing George H. W. Bush

Former US President George H. W. Bush Sr. He was rescued by the USS Finback after being shot down while he was on an air strike mission over Chichi Shima in the Bonin Islands during 2 September 1944.
