Tough Luck
USS Bowfin (SS-287)
25 April 1944 to 21 June 1944
USS Bowfin traveled from Fremantle to the Palau area, then to Midway, and finally, to Pearl Harbor for refit by Fulton. Enemy targets were scarce. On 14 May USS Bowfin torpedoed and sank a freighter in a three-ship convoy, after which she again received a severe depth charge attack. Before Bowfin departed Midway for Pearl Harbor, she offered support with lifeguard duties for the first U.S. air strike on Palau Island.

USS Bowfin was underway for 9,272 miles during her fourth patrol. Commanding Officer Griffith and higher authorities believed Bowfin sank 20,982 tons (three large vessels) and damaged 11,464 tons (two large vessels). JANAC credited USS Bowfin with 15,008 tons sunk (three large vessels). CDR Griffith was awarded a Silver Star.

Commanding Officer: CDR John Corbus, USN
