The Turtle
Design Issues
Engineering/design problems that had to be solved with the technology of each time:
  • watertight, pressure-proof hull
  • vertical and horizontal propulsion
  • vertical stability
  • variable ballast
  • steering controls
  • weapons-delivery system
Analysis:

The Turtle: (Revolutionary War) Conceived and created by David Bushnell to deliver his underwater mine, the Turtle was used in the winter of 1776 to attack the H.M.S. Eagle, a 64-gun frigate at anchor in New York harbor. While the attempt failed, the frigate was forced to re-locate thereby recognizing the power of the unknown force, whether used or not. What had been demonstrated was the ability to submerge with limited range for a period of 30 minutes. It was a crude first attempt for a submarine with limited, visual-only sensors and a mine with a timer.
