Education Program USS Ohio (SSBN-726) Design Issues A submarine 568 feet long, carrying 24 D-5 missiles as part of our Strategic Defense shield, the modern Strategic Ballistic Missile submarine employs the most up-to-date technology for weapons, sensors, communications and stealth. This is a submarine that is more quiet than the ocean back-ground noise - a veritable "Black Hole" for sound. The submarine uses this stealth to hide in the oceans waiting for a signal it hopes will never come. Its sole mission is to "remain undetected and ready". It employs the most modern communications systems with built in sophisticated redundancy. Its weapons systems achieve unbelievable accuracy at the far reaches of the envelope- with target thousands of miles away. As this sophistication has grown, so has the sensor technology to search for these and similar platforms. Frequently, the only viable search platform is another more sophisticated submarine. And so, it continues . a chess game of technology advantage/disadvantage. |
