Piece of USS Nautilus (SSN-571) Pressure Hull

In 1955 the first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, was born. Thus, changing submarines from slow underwater vessels to warships capable of sustaining 20-25 knots submerged for weeks on end.

The advent of USS Nautilus led to the parallel development of further (Skate-class) submarine. These subs were powered by single pressurised water reactors.

A faying surface (this item is a piece of the faying surface),  is one of the surfaces that are in contact at a joint.  Faying surfaces may be connected to each other by bolts or rivets, adhesives, welding, or soldering. An example would be steel pipe flanges, in which the connected ends of the flanges would be faying surfaces.
