The Battle of Midway was a decisive naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II that took place on 4–7 June 1942, six months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea.
Featuring a piece of USS Nautilus (SSN-571) pressure hull. Given to USS Bowfin Submarine museum as a commemorative item. This item is not currently on display but is part of our #HiddenHistory series.
The H. L. Hunley was the first submarine in history to sink an enemy ship. On February 17, 1864 the USS Housatonic was sunk after the Hunley crew rammed her spar torpedo into Housatonic’s hull. Hunley backed away and later sank before returning to shore.
