We want to take a moment to recognize the incredible individuals who continue to give their time, knowledge, and passion to preserving history and educating future generations.

One of those dedicated volunteers is Rick Walkinshaw. After retiring from a distinguished 30-year career as a Special Agent with the U.S. Secret Service, Rick began searching for a meaningful way to stay engaged and give back. Following a visit to the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum with his church group, he discovered an opportunity that quickly became much more than a pastime. “Volunteering at the Bowfin has provided me with a renewed sense of purpose,” Rick shared.

Since April 2024, Rick has welcomed visitors from around the world, helping bring the Bowfin’s history to life. In his volunteer role, he shares the submarine’s story, explains its design, and gives visitors a deeper understanding of life aboard during World War II. He especially enjoys interacting with guests and answering their questions to help them understand the Bowfin’s role in submarine service.

Volunteers like Rick are essential to preserving the legacy of the USS Bowfin and to creating meaningful experiences for every visitor who steps aboard.
